Historical information

Cornelius Stanley Lorraine Gillies was born in Melbourne in 1893 and moved to Claremont when he was about 9 years old with his father, William - a monumental mason - and his mother Elizabeth Gillies (nee Pendleberry). At age 22, Lorrie, as he was commonly known, enlisted as Lawrence Gillies (7159) 13th Field Company Engineers. On his retrurn to WA, he and a fellow AIF soldier, Harry Wales, established the Returned Soldiers' Monumental Works at Karrakatta and worked building war memorials throughout the state. He married Ivy Gunn of Cottesloe.
