It is quite likely that this hammer was used to establish ownership of piles of sandalwood, following dissension amongst settlers during 1847 over sandalwood rights sandalwood was marked on butt ends with a brand hammer

Historic: significant as representative of artefacts from sandalwood trade that saved the colony from hard times during the 1840's
