A metal blade has the trademark of Alex Mathieson and Son, Glasgow etched into it. There is no other manufacturers mark visible on the body of the plane
'RRS' is stamped into plain timber near handle, believed to indicate the name of the previous owner.
Donated to the museum in 1962 by Mr. P Salvaire who advised the plane had been used by his father. The R.R.S. initials would seem to support this history.

Alex Mathieson and Son (inverted crescent enclosing a star - the word Glasgow underneath)
The crescent and star was the official trademark for A. Mathieson & Son, a well-known Scottish firm of plane and edge-tool makers based in Glasgow and Edinburgh. The first marks bearing the name 'Mathieson & Son' began to be used in the mid-1840s. After 1856 the company's tool stamp read 'Mathieson & Son, Glasgow & Edinburgh'.
The non-inclusion of Edinburgh in the stamp of this blade may indicate it was made before this time but this cannot be confirmed as the 'A Mathieson Glasgow' marks were also widely used from ca1890.
