WHITEWORK, HANDKERCHIEF
Attractive presentation box of 4 hand embroidered ladies’ handkerchiefs, white work technique, made in China mid 20th C. The set comprises 4 white 100% cotton handkerchiefs each having a hand rolled edge. In one corner of each, is a rose sprig motif with small floral trim, a double square outline worked in 4 sided stitch, two pulled fabric pyramids and another motif resembling an elongated J.
For decades, embroidered handkerchiefs, an essential accessory for women, were a popular gift until the introduction of paper tissues.
Condition report. The hankerchiefs are in very good condition. The backing paper was acidic and the plastic cover was discouloured. Conservation. the handkerchiefs have been checked for damage and have been vacuumed. The paper backing has been replaced with acid free card and the hankerchiefs attached . The discoloured cover has been stored at the back of the display box, and the whole is enclosed in Mylar.
