Historical information

This series of black & white photographs was collected by Private Eric Sydney BANNISTER, regimental number 19. He joined the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (ANMEF) on the 11th August 1914, just a week after war was declared on Germany. The mission of the ANMEF was to destroy German radio stations and occupy German New Guinea and surrounding areas. The ANMEF secured military occupation on the 13th September 1914. The photographs of his deployment are of national significance and show one of Australia’s first military action in the First World War.

Contextual information

The photo depicts the funeral procession of Private Joseph Peter KING, 523, 13th Battalion. Joseph fought in Gallipoli for 16 months and after suffering 'shell shock', was returned home to Australia in June 1916. He passed away in October 1917 and was given a full military funeral in Lithgow, NSW. Pte. Eric BANNISTER who collected this series of photographs is in the procession and is marching next to the policeman. His unique collections are significant to Australia’s Military Heritage and provide a valuable insight to Australia's early military actions.
