First World War black and white photograph postcard showing ten (10) Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (ANMEF) soldiers in uniform, five (5) standing and five (5) seated on the ground. The soldier standing far right is holding a small bird. Handwritten on rear, "Rabaul / 1914 / Transport Sect", in black & blue ink.

Historical information

This series of black & white photographs was collected by Private Eric Sydney BANNISTER, regimental number 19, who joined the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (ANMEF) on the 11th August 1914, just a week after war was declared on Germany. The mission of the ANMEF was to destroy German radio stations and occupy German New Guinea and surrounding areas. The ANMEF secured military occupation on the 13th September 1914. The photographs of his deployment are of national significance and show one of Australia’s first military action in the First World War.

Contextual information

The photograph shows 10 ANMEF soldiers in uniform, described on the rear by Pte. BANNISTER as the Transport Section, in Rabaul and dated 1914. In September 1914 the ANMEF, along with the Royal Australian Navy and the Australian Imperial Force captured Rabaul from the German's. This was Australia's first action of WW1, and where the first Australian casualties occurred, 7 were killed and 4 wounded.
