Postcard showing photo of a three buckled belt with a large collection of military badges and buttons attached, including the Kings Royal Rifle Corps Cap Badge, New Zealand Fern Badge, Royal Artillery Collar Badge (Horse), Rising Sun Hat Badge and the Exploding Grenade badges.

Historical information

This series of black & white photographs was collected by Private Eric Sydney BANNISTER, regimental number 19. He joined the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (ANMEF) on the 11th August 1914, just a week after war was declared on Germany. The mission of the ANMEF was to destroy German radio stations and occupy German New Guinea and surrounding areas. The ANMEF secured military occupation on the 13th September 1914. The photographs of his deployment are of national significance and show one of Australia’s first military action in the First World War.

Printed in black lettering above the belt is, "Collected on the Battlefield / - At Gallipoli - " and underneath the belt is "By E.GRAHAM 9th BAT~ ".

Contextual information

The postcard depicts a belt with a large number of military badges and buttons collected on the Gallipoli Battlefield. It was common practice for soldiers to collect souvenirs to commemorate their service. Postcard is inscribed with, "Collected on the Battlefield / - at Gallipoli - / By E.GRAHAM 9th Bat". Private Edward GRAHAM, regimental 714, enlisted 01/09/1914 and was with the 9th Battalion, F Company. He returned to Australia 27/06/1919.
