Overview

WWI fundraising button featuring the portrait of Admiral Sir David Beatty, British admiral of the fleet, who commanded Britain's battle cruisers in the Battle of Jutland (1916).
It is made from printed paper between a tin base and celluloid cover.
He is wearing his dark dress uniform and a peaked cap with a lot of gold braid, designating his rank.
The background is dark brown in colour. His name is written in white block letters underneath his portrait.
The whole button is enclosed within a solid gilt frame with an attached brooch pin.
There is no visible maker's mark.

Historical information

David Richard Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty (born 17 January 1871, died 12 March 1936) was a Royal Navy officer who was the British Admiral of the Fleet during World War One. He was the First Sea Lord who accepted the German Imperial Navy’s surrender at the cessation of World War One.
