WWI fundraising button supporting the people of Belgium
c. 1915Circular badge or button produced during World War One to support the people of Belgium.
It is made from printed paper between a tin base and celluloid cover.
It features a depiction of a rampant lion holding the Belgian flag (black, yellow and red vertical panels) on a cream background, under which the word 'Belgique' is written in black.
The back of the badge is lined with cream coloured paper on which the maker's details are printed in red.
There is a metal pin which encircles the edge of the badge before ending in a point which can be pushed through clothing for attachment. There are no maker's details.
While the Commonwealth Button Fund held fundraising days in Australia specifically to support the people of Belgium, this button was actually made in Belgium, so was perhaps a home front initiative there. It would also have been a patriotic symbol.
