WWI button featuring Kitchener's Patriotic Pledge - No Drinks

c. 1916
Overview

Circular badge or button produced during World War One to support the patriotic pledge initiated by Kitchener of Khartoum (K of K) to abstain from drinking.
It is made from printed paper between a tin base and celluloid cover.
The button is red in colour with cream writing. There is an image of two hands shaking, around which the words 'Patriotic No Drinks K of K Pledge' are written.
The reverse has a metal back with a void into which a metal pin would be secured for attachment. However, the pin is missing. There is no maker on the button.

Historical information

The Kitchener Pledge was introduced in Australia following Lord Kitchener's death in June 1916. It was not a vow of temperance, but more a wartime pledge to abstain for the sake of sobriety and the economy.
