WWII era U.S. Army gold-toned powder compact - Fort Knox
c. 1940WWII era square, gold-toned powder compact featuring the unit crest of the Armoured Division. U.S. Army with the words 'Fort Knox' underneath on a white circular background. The crest is triangular with yellow at the top and blue and red on either side at the bottom.
Mobility, firepower, and speed are represented by the images of a tank tread, the barrel of a cannon, and a bolt of lightning. The tri-colour design is employed to represent the three types of forces—cavalry (yellow), infantry (blue), and artillery (red)—that make up an armoured division.
There is a matching gold metal clasp at the front and a long hinge at the back.
Inside the compact is a mirror on the upper side and a sprung gold metal cover featuring the name of the maker (Henriette) on the lower side.
The cover opens to the left and reveals a recess where the powder would have been and a raspberry coloured powder puff.
Fort Knox in Kentucky played a significant role in the U.S. Army's efforts during World War II, including being the site of Armored Force headquarters. From summer of 1940, the Armored Force was created at Fort Knox and was responsible for establishing armored formations, doctrine, and training in the use of armored vehicles.
Powder compacts such as this were sold as souvenirs to the soldiers to give as presents to their wives, mothers and sweethearts.
