Fort Knox in Kentucky played a significant role in the U.S. Army's efforts during World War II, including being the site of Armored Force headquarters. From summer of 1940, the Armored Force was created at Fort Knox and was responsible for establishing armored formations, doctrine, and training in the use of armored vehicles.
Powder compacts such as this were sold as souvenirs to the soldiers to give as presents to their wives, mothers and sweethearts.
