PHOTOGRAPH: OLD STABLES CATHERINE MCAULEY CENTRE, 1960

c. 1960
Overview

Black and white copy photo shows side view of building known as the old stables at the Catherine McAuley Centre. The low whitewashed building has a corrugated roof and some cardboard boxes are near front door, which has two small windows either side. A white-washed brick chimney faces the front of the photo, and trees are seen behind the building. The original roof was made of jarrah shingles. This building predates the two storey Benedictine Monastery built on this site in 1858, and is considered to be either the 2nd or 3rd oldest standing building in W.A. It has had many uses during its lifetime, possibly as a home for the monks first, later in 1864 a Benedictine map says it was used for 'stable, straw sta and & place for the cart' and during the Sisters of Mercy period it was used to pu and y & bottle the olive oil made on the premises. The Battye Library no. '53388 P' is printed on top right hand corner of photo.
