LACE, MACHINE, FAN
The fine burgundy silk and lace edged fan was used at Masonic balls in Victoria in late 1880s.
The large fan 330 mm length, consists of burgundy silk, in poor condition. The top edge has burgundy machine made lace with hand stitched silk picot edging and hand needlelace fillings in the open gaps.
Machine lace was on tulle, and the design elements cut away and attached to the silk fabric.
The silk fabric has hand painted picture of a young girl in period costume with a lace collar, holding an umbrella and walking in the garden with her dog. On the LHS are a flock of swallows and on the RHS a sprinkling of tiny flowers.
Fan conserved and placed in wooden box specially made by Greg Manzie H 550 mm W 840mm D 60mm
