PHOTOGRAPH: (COPY) 'J. CADMAN, CONFECTIONER, STATIONER, FANCY GOODS', DOYLE COURT, ROKEBY ROAD, CIRCA 1900
c. 1900Black and white photograph from original
Front: Shopfront with the name 'J. Cadman' and 'Confectioner, Stationer and Fancy Goods' painted on the store front. The front windows of the store are full of items, and a service desk can just be made out through the doorway. To the left of the words 'J. Cadman' can be read part of a word 'os'… this is believed to be part of the word 'Bros'and may refer to the Richardson Bros. grocers which was loacted here aroud the turn of the nineteenth century.
Two men stand outside the shop on the footpatht, with a woman and a girl on the balcony above. Another girl is standing on the pavement closer to the shop, on the right-hand side. Given the dates, it seems that the image may be of William Cadman and/or members of his family.
Reverse: Handwritten note: ' Memo Richard. The name Cadman is Mrs Norman Brown, a school-mate of Mrs (?) Chugg. She is over 80 and has a very retentive memory. She lives in Fairway, Nedlands - a Subiaco ratepayer. I have made a reference to her in the former Subiaco Cyclist Club photograph. I have a hazy idea that Mrs (?) Chugg has invited her to the official opening - I have not said anything!. K (Ken Bowen) 16 Oct. 1975'.
Second note: 'This Cadman store was on the west side of Rockeby, just north of the Bagot Road intersection. Later, Cadmans moved to east side of Rockeby on the corner where Crossways now. ?stands. Information from Mr R. Doublas 221 Heytesbury. ?'
While the WA Post Office Directories identify a William Cadman as operating a confectioners from this part of Rokeby Road, it is unclear why the shop features 'J. Cadman' on it's front sign. The Cadman business later relocated to the other side of Rokeby Road, where it stayed until at least 1949.
N.B. The date given from this photograph relates to the 'OS' on to the left of Cadman's store which appears to relate to the 'Richardson Bros. Grocers' which is recorded as operating next to Cadman's store at this time.
William developed the 'Greetings from Subiaco' postcard range and published a number of other postcards, as well as a booklet 'Views of Subiaco', which feature in the museum's collection.
