Jungworth, Secretary to the Premier of Victoria’s Department and Mr. Strachey, Minister of Food.

Historical information

The 'Britain Says Thank You' Exhibition was a gesture of thanks from Britain for the many gifts of food which had been received from all parts of the Empire.

Between 1940 and 1948, over 50 million food parcels were received from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Americas and the colonies. Bulk food sent to Britain in this period exceeded 53,000 tons.

Contextual information

(Dame) Dorothy Margaret Tangney (1907-1985), a passionate social justice advocate and an active member of the Australian Labour Party, became Australia's first female Senator and represented WA in Canberra. Was the first woman to join a Federal Parliamentary Committee on being elected a member of the Joint Committee on Social Security.
