Army NCO And Instructors, Claremont Drill Hall
1917Mounted photograph of group of Non Commissioned Officers (NCO) and their instructors outside the Claremont Drill Hall.
Between Stirling Highway and St Quentin Avenue. Originally a roller skating rink. Became a drill hall during World War I. It was listed in postal directories as the 'Forty-fourth Battalion Drill Hall and Area Office'. (Australian Army Canteens Service also shown at same address). After World War II, taken over by the Air Force until the early 1990s. Vampire aircraft mounted on plinth on highway frontage became a landmark and gave rise to the name Avion Way when the site was redeveloped.
