Historical information

(Dame) Dorothy Margaret Tangney (1907-1985), daughter of Eugene Tangney (c.1877-1961) and Ellen Augustine Shanahan (c.1875-1946), was born in North Perth.

A passionate social justice advocate and an active member of the Australian Labour Party, became Australia's first female Senator and represented WA in Canberra. Was the first woman to join a Federal Parliamentary Committee on being elected a member of the Joint Committee on Social Security.

Made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1968.

(Dame) Enid Muriel Lyons (1897–1981) was an Australian politician. She was notable as the being the first woman to be elected to the House of Representatives and to serve in the federal cabinet.

Prior to her own political career, she was best known as the wife of Joseph Lyons, Premier of Tasmania (1923-1928) and Prime Minister of Australia (1932-1939).

Was made a Dame of the Order of Australia (AD) on Australia Day 1980.
