GENERAL EMBROIDERY, MAT

Overview

Silk ribbon embroidery on costume flourished in Europe in 1750s. Around 1850 there was a revival in this technique, at the time this tray cloth was made. The ribbons and organza base fabric are made of silk, which deteriorates more rapidly than other fabrics. Thus it is rare to see such old silk ribbon embroidery with a rich, elaborate textured design.
In each corner a spray of silk ribbon carnation flowers, pinks in opposite corners and lemon in others, 180 x 90 mm. Between the sprays, two single carnations. Stems in green silk stem stitch, calyxes in long and short sttich in green silk floss. Edge of mat embroidered in buttonhole stitch in two shades of green silk floss.
Original fabric was ecru silk organza, evidenced near the embroidered flowers. This has decomposed and been replaced with taupe polyester organza. Daisy flowers embroidered in ecru silk thread along each edge. 10 on long side, 8 on shorter.
