BRAZILIAN, PANELS AND CARDS

12 floral cards inserts and two panels with Brazilian embroidery were stitched in WA by Kay MacFarlane as teaching examples to illustrate the different threads, stitches and their use in Brazilian embroidery.
(a) to (l) are cards, (m) and (n) are panels. Inside the cards, are listed the threads and stitches used for each element in the design, as well as the number of bullion wraps, the main characteristic of Brazilian work.
The special rayon threads come in solid, shaded and variegated colours and in different weights and twists, the ones used here are Lola, Iris and Glory.
Green foliage in most instances is in stem and feather stitch with leaves in alternating satin stitch.
(a) Rolled Roses & Buds- 3 variegated pink bullion rolled roses + 2 buds; 3 mauve hyacinth flowers in French knots. Leaves - variegated alternating satin stitch: green foliage in stem and feather stitch.
(b) Fancy daisy- 2 deep pink flowers C, stamens in cream pistil stitch, cream French knot centres; buds pink French knots; green foliage in stem and feather stitch.
© Grapes- 2 bunches burgundy grapes - bullion stitch. 2 green leaves in buttonhole, stem stitch stems.
(d ) Queen Anne & Camellia – 1 bright pink flower in cast on stitch, French knot cream flowers; with 5 leaves in alternating satin stitch.
(e) Geron Daisy – 2 variegated pink flowers in pistil st., with cream French knots in one centre, cream satin stitch in second centre; 3 buds in pistil st; green foliage in stem & feather, leaves - alternating satin st.
(f) Creeping Flower – 8 mauve and burgundy flowers in bullion & pistil st., French knot buds + foliage.
(g) Knotted Lazy Daisy – 3 pink flowers & 3 buds knotted lazy daisy, sepal - bullion stitch: foliage & leaves.
(h) Japanese Violets – mauve bullion flower with yellow French knot centre + 3 buds: foliage & leaves.
(i) Daisy, Rose and Bud – 3 pink and mauve flowers & 2 buds in cast-on stitches: foliage & leaves.
(j) Jasmine Flower – 1apricot flower, in cast on st. white pistil st stamens, spray white French knot flowers.
(k) Maria’s Rose – 2 cast on variegated roses & bud with 4 lavender French knot sprays; foliage & leaves.
(l) Fuchsia Flower – single pink flower in knotted lazy daisy, bullion and pistil stitch stamina: 4 leaves in alternating satin stitch: stems in stem stitch.
(m) On this PANEL, with overlocked edges, are 7 floral designs, similar to 7 of the cards – a, c, e, g, h, i, j
in bullion, French knots, stem, feather, satin, pistil, leaf, detached lazy daisy, buttonhole, cast on stitch.
(n) PANEL has machine hems on three sides, selvedge on fourth side.
Stitches: bullion, French knots, stem, and leaf stitch.
Design is a circle consisting of a white and gold twisted cord with a bow at the top. There are 4 pink and mauve floral sprays at N, S, E and W. with pale green feather stitch and dark green stem stitch foliage scrolling between. The centre of the flowers at N and S have metallic seed beads.
