RIBBON WORK, TRAY CLOTH

Overview

Silk ribbon embroidery on costume flourished in Europe in 1750s. Around 1850 there was a revival in this technique, at the time this try cloth was made. The ribbons and organza base fabric are made of silk, which deteriorates more rapidly than other fabrics. Thus it is rare to see such old silk ribbon embroidery with a rich, elaborate textured design.
In each corner a spray of silk ribbon carnation flowers, pinks in opposite corner and lemon in others, 180 x 90 mm. Between sprays, two single carnations. Stems in green silk stem stitch, calyxes in long and short stitch in green silk floss. Edge of mat embroidered in buttonhole stitch in two shades of green silk floss.
