GENERAL EMBROIDERY, EDGING
Exquisite fine hand embroidered braid purchased by the donor in China in 1996. Intricate colour shading and fine stitching on small motifs is rarely seen today. Silk thread on silk satin fabric, one black (a) and one white (b).
Each having similar designs of Chinese symbolism in the flowers and birds.
Orchid – Spring symbolises love and beauty, elegance and grace, nobility, wealth and fortune
Bamboo - Summer, symbolizes flexibility and strength.
Chrysanthemum – Autumn- symbolizes duration, vitality and long life.
Cherry blossom – Winter - symbolize feminine beauty, power, and mystique,
Golden pheasant – courage: Phoenix – symbolising " peace and prosperity, justice, obedience”.
Peacock - beauty and dignity, power, rank, believed to bring wealth and prosperity.
Crane one of the most loved birds in China since ancient times. a symbol of noble character symbolised longevity and wisdom. Represents long-lasting love and loyalty in marriage, as the bird is monogamous and stays with one partner until death. In 2003, the red-crowned crane was designated as China's official and national bird.
