TRYING PLANE

Overview

Long, rectangular section body with a handle installed midway to the rear portion, a square section slot to accommodate the blade is about halfway along the upper body while a smaller rectangular slot for the blade projection is in the lower surface.
The name [A.K.DUNCAN] has been stamped in several places on the body over a similar name stamp, obliterating the original inscription. A trying plane, also known as a jointer plane or try plane, is a tool used to straighten and flatten edges and other surfaces.

Historical information

Tools used by Charles Duncan in his Blacksmith and Wheelright shop. The shop was called Duncan & McNamee and was located on the corner of Jull Street and Third Road. It was open from 1926-1938. A trying plane, also known as a jointer plane or try plane, is a tool used to straighten and flatten edges and other surfaces. Alex Mathieson and Son (Est. 1792) were a Scottish hand tool company, leading in the creation of hand tools.
