Overview

Auger for drilling wood has a tapered point with helix leading to spiral fluted section with flat chisel edges. Above the flutes is a round shaft and at the top is a short square section with a hollow cylinder at right angles to the shaft.
Maker's marks are stamped into the shaft, name and trade mark star and crescent moon and on the opposite side is the auger size. There is a letter and number stamped into the square section at the head.

Historical information

Tools used by Charles Duncan in his Blacksmith and Wheelright shop. The shop was called Duncan & McNamee and was located on the corner of Jull Street and Third Road. It was open from 1926-1938. Alex Mathieson and Son (Est. 1792) were a Scottish hand tool company, leading in the creation of hand tools. An auger is used to drill holes into materials or surfaces.
