CROCHET, FILET, MAT

c. 1930 - 1939
Overview

In the depression of the 1930s, fabrics, threads and handcraft materials in short supply. Folk could not afford luxury goods or fine accessories for the home. This crocheted mat was part of a set, given as a wedding present in 1932, to form part of a young lady’s trousseau.
White circular mat with cotton fabric centre 100mm diameter, whose perimeter is stitched in feather stitch. Surrounding this are 7 large open circular flowers, 90mm diameter, formed by using princess machine tape with crochet designs in the centre and around the perimeter, creating a scalloped edge.
