Historical information

Lew Whiteman qualified as a pilot in 1930. His father disapproved as they lost Lew’s cousin Lieutenant Harold Whiteman in a training accident for the Royal Flying Corps in England in 1915.

There is a story that Lew was flying with the Aero Club WA and could see his father’s car down below and decided to stay in the air and keep flying to avoid confrontation.

Lew flew for only 2 years, yet in that short time he managed to win this trophy for his landing skills. In later life, Lew would not fly, not even as a passenger.
