Military Horse Collar

Overview

Flexible leather horse collar. Wide leather strap with narrow strap attached along length, which has chains and straps for another harness to be attached.

Historical information

This leather horse collar, one of five we have in the Whiteman Collection, was used in World War I to aid horses in pulling gun carriages or support waggons carrying items such as rations, medical equipment, ammunition, spare saddles or horse feed. The collar's design allows for weight to be evenly distributed between a horse's neck and shoulders, with a 'quick release' mechanism in place for emergencies or injured animals, as preserving them was imperative to the war effort.
