Magazine Wall Lamp

Overview

Lamp, blue with cream interior. Six, sides. Flat back. One large and two small glass sides decorative open work around base for air draught. Rear opening with D shaped handle. Candle holder, cream, attached to removable tray. Strong handle.

Historical information

Used in fortresses to light the gunpowder magazine but could also hang from a hook to light the passageways. Lamps were placed in recesses in the wall of the magazine, separated from the magazine itself by a glass window.

Contextual Information

This type of lamp was introduced in 1870 and the candles could burn up to 8 hours. They were used throughout WWII, despite electricity being introduced into many forts in the 1890s.
