Large framed photograph of Edward George Pettit who was born in Albany in 1889 and died in Busselton in 1975. Edward Pettit worked as a Lumper who unloaded freight from trucks and /or docks.

The origin of the term "Lumper" is murky. Some say the word started from workers carrying “lumps” of cargo. Others believe that it refers to the slang “lumping” of carrying heavy loads. Others insist that the name came from the back injuries workers incurred after unloading too many pallets.
