PLATE; BREAD AND BUTTER
Vitrified white ceramic round side plate with a blue edge, part of a dinner set made for the Sisters of Mercy in Toodyay.
A Sisters of Mercy Toodyay emblem is inset at the top edge in blue, matching the colour of the rim. Emblem design banner at top, 'NOBILITAS, SOLA, VIRTUS' while at the bottom of the emblem is 'Toodyay'. In the centre inside a circle on the emblem are two letters 'CM' in Italic script (Presumed to stand for Convent of Mercy)'.
A small smudge of blue is also visible on the back of the plate.
Some cracking of glazing is visible, but plate is in good condition.
Used by the Sisters of Mercy at Toodyay. The Sisters of Mercy had a presence at Toodyay between 1883 and 2003.
The St Aloyisius Convent of Mercy School at Toodyay was was run by the Sisters of Mercy between 1903 and 1971. Following the closure of the school some of the Sisters remained at Toodyay for pastoral work until finally leaving in 2003.
From the style of the plate it is estimated it may date from the 1950s or 1960s, but this is to be confirmed.

The back-side of the plate has makers' marks stamped on in black. " 'DURALINE' Super vitrified, Grindley Hotel Ware Co., England. Gibsons & Paterson PTY Ltd. 3-61 "
The trade name 'Duraline' was adopted by Grindley Hotel Ware in the 1930s. The Sydney based retailer, Gibsons & Paterson Ltd was established in 1913. A Queensland branch was also established in that year (the parent company having formed in New Zealand in 1909). During the 1920s Leonard Paterson had travelled back to Britain, picking up agencies for merchandising including the Grindley Hotel Ware product.
Provenance: Ownership transferred to museum during the vacation of the Sisters of Mercy site in Toodyay by the Franciscans of the Immaculate Heart in January 2017.
