Historical information

St Mary in the Valley Anglican Church was built in 1871 in Kelmscott on River Road by Thomas Buckingham Jr for 62 Pounds. The church was completed 6 August. Thomas Buckingham Jr and Mary Salter were the first couple to be married in the church on 3 October 1871.

On 26 May 1923 the church established a Mothers Union which would change its name to the Ladies Guild on 7 May 1964, one year after the new, larger church was built on the site of the demolished original church building. The guild would hold monthly meetings that often included a guest speaker, prayer as well as what fundraising they would do to raise money for a variety of charitable causes. Speakers at their meetings included Ivor T Birtwistle who spoke about local history, Mr Galthorpe who spoke about the Friends of Royal Perth Hospital, Mr Sykes who spoke about Christian missions to Communist countries and Mrs Sutton who spoke about her doll collection.

To raise money for their charity work the Guild often held Jumble Sales along with a monthly stall at the local shopping centre where they sold cakes, cookies, knitted and sewn garments and other craft items, often made by members of the Church.

In 1991 the Ladies Guild published this cookbook full of recipies contributed by parishoners of St Mary in the Valley. In 2000 the Guild published a second recipe book. In 2002 the Ladies Guild folded. Kelsie Faas joined the Ladies Guild in 1972 and was a member up to the end, but her attendance at meetings and events was spasmodic due to raising three children and working as a teacher.
