The base of the stand has six triangular cut outs around the edge. In the centre of the stand is a tall vertical metal handle formed by two thin metal bars vertically crossing over each other halfway up, creating the shape of an X. There is another bar that forms the top of the handle by attaching to each side of the X bar. The stand is made from brass, but would have once been plated in silver. Time and polishing appears to have removed the silver plating from the stand. The stand rests on six ball feet, attached to the base of the stand. There are five square open baskets attached a quarter way up the stand that would contain the bottles.
The glass bottles of this set would hold condiments to include, salt, pepper, vinegar and oils. The glass jar would have contained mustard. Three bottles have glass domed stoppers, i.e 12.d.1, 12.e.1, 12.f.1 and one bottle is minus a screw on top, possibly the salt shaker. There is one bottle that has a pepper shaker top, i.e 12.b.1 and a jar that has a top with a lift up lid,i.e 12.c.1. The glass is cut in a triangular and square pattern.
The first Cruet sets were introduced late 17th Century to hold oil and vinegar in glass bottles with silver mounts. Later Silver castors were added for pepper plus more bottles form condiments. Gradually over time , more bottles were added to hold various exotic sauces, e.g Soy, which were brought back to Europe and England from Asia.
