Overview

Round footed bowl with a chintz dark green background pattern with light green leaves and white flowers with yellow centres. On the side of the bowl is a yellow shield with black outline, enclosing a black swan with the words , West Australia" in a banner below the swan. The pattern extends to 30cm below the inside of the rim which has a gold line and the pattern is finished with a black line.

Historical information

Grimwades Pottery was founded in 1885 by Leonard Lumsden Grimwade and his brother Sidney Richard Grimwade, who were both experienced potters. By 1906 Grimwades Ltd had four factories in the Potteries, and King George V and Queen Mary visited in 1913.

Contextual Information

This bowl is part of a wash basin and jug set used in the bedroom for personal washing when there was no indoor plumbing, late 19th Century to late 20th Century.

The mark of the maker is one used in the 1930's and with the reference to West Australia it appears that this bowl was made commemorate the Centenary of WA in 1929.

This bowl was donated by Hilda Lord, wife of Geoff Lord who was President of the Busselton Historical Society in 1975 and instrumental in establishing the Museum in the Old Butter Factory Museum.

The Lord family arrived in the Busselton area in 1922 as one of the original Group settlement families at Chapman Hill/ Walsall. The Group Settlement scheme was a Western Australian/ United Kingdom government migration scheme introduced in 1921, to provide a labour force to develop agricultural land in the South West region of Western Australia, reduce unemployment in the United Kingdom and reduce dependence on food imports from interstate. Members of the Lord family have been active community members in the Busselton region since they arrived in 1922.
