PHOTOGRAPH (COPY): JONES FAMILY OUTSIDE THEIR HOME IN ROBERTS ROAD, SUBIACO, CIRCA 1894
c. 1894This copy of a black and white photograph shows members of the Jones family standing outside their recently completed home in Roberts Road, Subiaco. The house features a long verandah with highly ornamental cast-iron lace. The gables are likewise highly decorative. There are three urns filled with plants placed at intervals around the side of the house.
Mr and Mrs Jones stand with three boys and an older girl. There is a small black dog at the right of the image. Mr Jones is wearing a dark suit with a stiff white collar. Mrs Jones, standing in the middle, wears a long black frock with leg-o-mutton sleeves and a lace yoke with high collar. The young woman at the left, Avonia Jones, wears a short jacket with leg-o-mutton sleeves, a black blouse and a long check skirt. Three young boys stand at the front of the group, two of whom, Fred and Jack, wear two piece suits with short pants. The youngest child, Frank, wears a long black cloak. A small dog sits off to the right hand side of the image.
Rowland Jones was a former convict who became the first Hansard reporter at the Parliament of Western Australia. With his family, he built the first brick home in Subiaco around 1886, known locally as 'Jones' Folly'.
