The biplane has a tri-coloured roundel, a white 'W' on the fuselage and the serial number on the tail, in front of three vertical stripes. Although the profile is in black and white, these would have been red, white and blue.

The drawing is signed in thick black pen by the artist.

Norman Clifford was writing a book about the history of the Australian Flying Corps. which this drawing may have been intended to feature in.

Historical information

C1948 was a Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5a built by Air Navigation Co., Addlestone, Surrey. It was assigned to No. 2 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps.

Norman Clifford is one of Australia's foremost aviation artists. His works are held in the R.A.A.F. Museum at Point Cook, the Australian War Memorial and in many other public and private collections.
