First World War Postcard of The Pyramids and Sphinx of Giza, Egypt

1900 - 1919
Overview

A black and white postcard showing a front on view of the Sphinx with three pyramids in the background. In front of the sphinx is a local man sitting on a camel with an instrument or camara on a tripod behind him and a box to the side of that. The image is taken from the right-hand side of the sphinx so that the first pyramid is very close behind it and the other two are further away in the distance to the left. There is a large crease on the left-hand side of the postcard which is visible both front and back. There is also a stain on the front next to the crease. The front of the postcard has a printed description of the image and the reverse has proforma printing.

Historical information

The Great Sphinx of Giza is the most famous. It was carved directly out of the bedrock during the 4th Dynasty (c.2613–2494 BC), which also makes it the oldest. Ancient Egyptian sphinxes represented the king with the body of a lion, in a clear demonstration of his power.
