'Weapons of Precision' Metal Tin used by Private William John BEER 512
c. 1910A First World War era advertising box that was originally dark green outside and a gold brass colour inside. Made of tin the box is fashioned to look like a book. There are raised bands on the spine together with printing of the “title” and “author” that give the resemblance to an actual book. Inside the lid are printed details of the advertiser. The box although complete with an opening lid and working hinges, is in poor condition with rust on the inside, front and edges. The back shows less rust but has dents, scratches and a patch of damage at the right-hand bottom corner. None of the original printing on the outside front cover is visible.
This book-shaped object is a Tabloid-brand medicine box, manufactured by the British pharmaceuticals company Burroughs Wellcome & Co. During the early 20th century, the catch-phrase “Weapons of Precision” helped sell BWC’s medicine chests to British colonists. During the First World War when BWC produced quantities of tetanus antitoxins, anti-gas gangrene sera, and typhoid vaccines for the Western Front, this perhaps seemed less far-fetched. The tin was used by Private William John BEER 512 to hold his shaving kit.
