World War I Army Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) School

Overview

Two officers and a sergeant with a group of 10th Light Horse troopers in front of the Claremont Drill Hall. The troopers all have the traditional emu feather cockade, bandoliers, riding breeches and leggings of the Light Horse battalions.

Historical information

Between Stirling Highway and St Quentin Avenue. Originally roller skating rink. Became a drill hall during World War I. Was listed in postal directories as 'Forty-fourth Battalion Drill Hall and Area Office'. Australian Army Canteens Service also shown at same address. After World War II, was taken over by the Air Force until early 1990s. Vampire aircraft mounted on plinth on highway frontage became a landmark and gave rise to the name Avion Way when the site was redeveloped.
