Overview

A studio portrait, in cabinet card format, of Mary Hendry in a long dark dress with train and light coloured elaborately decorated bonnet. Gloved hands rest on handle of a parasol. Studio scene of garden, limestone wall and iron lace panels.

Historical information

Mary Fulton Hendry (c.1854-1934), daughter of John Hendry and Charlotte Sharp.

Married Robert McClure (1856-1912), son of Charles McClure and Mary Macdowell, at Norwood, South Australia in June 1882

The McClure family came to Claremont from Adelaide when husband Robert was appointed manager and attorney when, in February 1897, A. M. Bickford and Sons established a Perth branch.

The family lived at Matheson's Terrace, situated at 16 Victoria Avenue, Claremont from 1897-1902.

In 1903 they purchased 'The Bungalow', a stone two storey house on the corner of Jetty Road and Victoria Avenue, Claremont with terraced lawns to the water's edge of Freshwater Bay. The family lived at this residence until c.1933.

Robert and Mary had one child:

Charlotte 'Chattie' McClure (1888-1989).

Mary died at Claremont on the 27th November 1934, aged 80.
