B/W prints. (a) Front view of the council building with central front door, [CLAREMONT MUNICIPAL CHAMBERS] across the face of the buiilding with central clock above. Tiled roof with weather vane on top of central lantern. Flag poles on either side of the door: the Western Australian flag on the left and the sesqicentenary flag on the right. (b) A view of the north eastern front corner of the building, steps down to the park and the western wall of the bus stop shelter. (c ) The north eastern view, library on the rear corner steps to the side entrance on the raised paved area, and front of building on the right. (d) South eastern view showing the library on the left and looking up the side of the building. (e) The south western view shows the drive into the car park from Bay View Terrace, the library on the southern corner, the library entrance under the balcony up to the front of the building. (f) The western view with library and car park on right, the side of the building facing the lawn area at the rear of the war memorial

Historical information

Municipality of Town of Claremont was excised from Claremont Road Board (which became Nedlands City Council) on 15 June 1898. The area of the municipality - 1.9 square miles. District is divided into three wards, South, East and West (North). First Councillors elected August 1898. The Town of Claremont was declared on the 15th June 1898. The first council elections took place on 13 Aug 1898 for 9 vacancies. The following were elected; James King (mayor), and councillors: J de Castilla, E A Harney, P J Fitzpatrick, James Grave, A G Ross, A Barnett, J J Briggs,G W Johnston. The Claremont Council Chambers (designed by Edwin Summerhayes) was completed in 1899. On July 1st 1961, due to a Local Government Act, the Municipality of Claremont was renamed the Town of Claremont.
