Overview

A black and white photographic portrait of Raymond Parker WARBURTON, glued onto cardboard within a small cream coloured paper folder. On the front of the folder is printed “Sketch Portrait”. Raymond is dressed in a double-breasted overcoat, shirt, tie, military style cap and is holding a pair of gloves in his right hand. Handwritten in black ink on the back of folder, “Raymond P. Warburton / during the Great War.”

The words, “Sketch Portrait”, is underlined on front cover of folder. Inside folder at bottom right side of picture is written, “Parisian Studio / Liverpool”. Handwritten in black ink on the back of folder, “Raymond P. Warburton / during the Great War.”

Contextual information

This portrait photograph of Raymond Parker WARBURTON shows him dressed in a seaman’s uniform. Raymond was employed as an Electrical Engineer on board the Admiralty Transport ship ‘SS Pera’, (HMAT A4 Pera). The transport ship was owned by P&O London and leased by the Commonwealth during the First World War. Raymond was employed on 1/12/1915 in London and discharged on 09/09/1917. He then transferred to the ‘SS Shropshire’ and remained with that troop transport ship until his discharge in June 1919. The ship ‘SS Pera’ was used to transport Australian and New Zealand troops overseas and was part of the first convoy amassed in King George Sound, Albany WA, and departed 1st November 1914. Onboard the ‘SS Pera’ on that date was 90 soldiers, 6 nurses and 391 horses. The Pera was torpedoed and sunk in Mediterranean Sea on the 19/10/1917.
