Overview

Cream coloured, ‘Admiralty S.W.’ Transport Card issued to Raymond Parker WARBURTON. Details on card are printed in blue ink, with a wavy boundary line. At top centre of card is a circled badge with crown and the words ‘Admiralty. S.W.’ within the circle. Top right shows card ‘No. 36146’, in black ink and a large letter ‘C’, (blue ink) in corner. At the bottom of card, stamped in red ink is, ‘Issued after 1st March 1916’.

Inserted in spacing is handwritten details “R. Warburton / H.M.T.” in black ink and a purple stamp of, “PERA” with “Issued after 1st March 1916” stamped in red ink on lower section.

Contextual information

Raymond Parker WARBURTON was employed as an Electrical Engineer on board the Admiralty Transport Pera. HMAT A4 Pera, a transport ship owned by P&O London, was leased by the Commonwealth during the First World War. Transport cards were issued for security purposes to show that individuals had completed the appropriate background checks and they were authorised to enter secure areas such as ports and offshore facilities. The ship ‘SS Pera’ was used to transport Australian and New Zealand troops overseas and was part of the first convoy amassed in King George Sound, Albany WA, and departed 1st November 1914. Onboard the ‘SS Pera’ on that date was 90 soldiers, 6 nurses and 391 horses. The Pera was torpedoed and sunk in Mediterranean on the 19/10/1917.
