On front of card, “U. S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR / IMMIGRATION SERVICE / Port of MORFOLK, VA. / AUG 14 1917, 191 / (DATE) / The seaman described on the face thereof examined by me. His status / as a seaman is: Division 1.” With Division 2 and 3 crossed out. On rear is “Form 685 / U. S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR / IMMIGRATION SERVICE / SEAMAN’S IDENTIFICATION CARD / ORIGINAL / No. 78469 / Name Raymond Warburton / Age 26 on July 28th 1917 / (DATE) / Nationality Australian / Marks: -” with the signature of Inspector in Charge is written in red ink across photograph.
This ‘Seaman’s Identification Card’, was issued to Raymond Parker WARBURTON, in the Port of Norfolk, Virginia USA on the 14 August 1917. He was given ‘Division 1’ status as a seaman. With the outbreak of the First World War Raymond took up service as an electrician on troop transport ships. Between 01/12/1915 and 09/09/1917 Raymond served aboard the ‘SS Pera’ and from 19/12/1917 to 13/06/1919 he was on the ‘SS Shropshire’.
