Overview

A metal medallion featuring HMAS Perth III, FFH157. The obverse of the medallion has a round edge with the inscription ‘HMAS Perth’ at top and ‘FFH 157’ at the bottom. The crest of HMAS Perth III is in the centre of the piece on a black background. The crest includes an enamel filled Tudor crown with the word ‘Perth’ immediately below it. The crest is above a circular golden coloured frame depicting an enamel filled black swan. Below this is a boomerang and two crossed stone axes with enamel filled heads. The ship’s banner is located below these and includes the inscription ‘Fight and Flourish’. On the reverse of the medallion the round edge carries the inscription ‘Presented by the Commanding Officer / HMAS Perth’. On a black background in the centre of the medallion is the Perth crest, consisting of two swans with upturned wings each side of a Tudor crown and white shield bearing the red cross of Saint George. A small black swan is located in the left-hand upper quadrant. The ship’s Latin motto ‘Floreat’ appears on a small banner below the shield.

Historical information

HMAS Perth III was built by Tenix Defence Systems in Williamstown, Victoria. The keel was laid down on 24 July 2003 and the ship was launched the following year , 20 March 2004. After undergoing sea trials, HMAS Perth was commissioned on 26 August 2006 with pennant number 157 and carries the Motto ‘Fight and Flourish’.The ship’s home base is at Fleet Base West, HMAS Stirling on Garden Island in Western Australia. Carrying a crew of 177 and a Seahawk Helicopter the ship is capable of anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, search and rescue missions, and launching missiles and torpedoes.

Contextual information

HMAS Perth III FFH 157 is the eighth Anzac Class Helicopter Frigate of the Royal Australian Navy and the third ship to bear Perth’s name. The cap was presented to the Curator of Princess Royal Fortress by the Commanding Officer Anthony Nagle, who served on HMAS Perth III from 7 May 2021 - 30 June 2023.
