1952A small, folded card booklet with a light brown woven cotton cover. ‘Motor Driver’s License’ is printed in black ink in the middle of the front cover. Beige paper covers the inside of the license. The left-hand facing page includes the license number, fee, license holder’s details and signature, dates and signature of the police officer authorising the license. Official license details are printed in black ink while the holder’s details and both signatures are handwritten in black ink. On the right-hand facing page is the heading ‘Endorsements'. The back cover of the booklet bears no inscriptions. The front and back of the woven cover are discoloured and shows signs of wear. The inside pages are also discoloured. On front cover “MOTOR DRIVER’S LICENSE” with left-hand facing page reading “WESTERN AUSTRALIA / No. 161178 / Fee 5/- L69033 / License No 161178 / Granted by the Commissioner of \ / Police, W.A. / to JACKMAN / Charles Frederick / of 66 Forrest Street / Narrogin / to drive Car + Wagon / is hereby renewed and in force / for a period of twelve months / ending 1st day of / July 1953 / Date Renewed 2/7/52 / Indecipherable signature / Member of the Police Force / Authorised by Commissioner.” Inside back cover: “ENDORSEMENTS”.
Charles Frederick JACKMAN was born on 9 May 1919 in Lockwood, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England. He travelled to Fremantle, Western Australia in 1934, arriving on 23 December via Colombo. JACKMAN enlisted in the 124th Heavy Artillery Battery , Royal Australian Artillery (militia) on 29 July 1937 at the age of eighteen (18). He spent three (3) years and ten (10) days in service at the Princess Royal Fortress in Albany, Western Australia, and qualified as a “Layer” and “Lewis Gunner”, training militia gunners at the Princess Royal Fortress before being discharged on 7 August 1940. On 27 August 1940, JACKMAN enlisted in the 5th Veterinary Hospital and was discharged as “Medically Unfit” on 21 January 1941. He worked in Albany, including at the Freemasons Hotel on Stirling Terrace for three (3) months until July 1941, and the Vacuum Oil Company from 28 June 1943 until 17 January 1946. JACKMAN married Betty Milne at St John the Evangelist Church in Albany on 12 April 1947, and died in Albany on13 July 1985. He is buried in Allambie Cemetery, Albany.
