Overview

A British Passport with blue cardboard cover pages. The front cover has a passport number and stamped date on a white background. ‘British Passport’ in gold lettering appears below this with the British Coat of Arms in the centre of the cover, followed by ‘United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’ in gold lettering. The hand-written bearer’s name is located at the bottom of the cover page on a white background. Inside the front cover is an official statement from Sir John Allsesbrook Simon. Page 1 states the Passport Number, hand-written bearer’s name and nationality. Page 2 indicates hand-written place and date of birth, address and details of appearance, with a photograph and signature of JACKMAN on page 3, along with an embossed official stamp for the Foreign Office alongside a black ink stamp for the same office dated ‘10 November 1934’. Page 4 indicates in handwriting that the passport is valid for travel in the British Empire and includes the expiry date. There are two ink stamps on Page 7 of the passport; one for the Port of Colombo in purple ink and the other for Customs at Fremantle, Western Australia, dated ‘23 December 1934’ in red ink. The inside of the back cover states the regulations for the use of the passport.

Contextual information

Charles Frederick JACKMAN was born on 9 May 1919 in Lockwood, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England. He travelled to Fremantle, Western Australia in 1934, arriving on 23 December via Colombo. JACKMAN enlisted in the 24th Heavy Artillery Battery , Royal Australian Artillery (militia) on 29 July 1937 at the age of eighteen (18). He spent three (3) years and ten (10) days in service at the Princess Royal Fortress, Albany, Western Australia, and qualified as a “Layer” and “Lewis Gunner” before being discharged on 7 August 1940. On 27 August 1940, JACKMAN enlisted in the 5th Veterinary Hospital as and was discharged as “Medically Unfit” on 21 January 1941. He worked locally including at the Freemasons Hotel on Stirling Terrace for three (3) months until July 1941, and the Vacuum Oil Company from 28 June 1943 until 17 January 1946. JACKMAN married Betty Milne at St John the Evangelist Church in Albany on 12 April 1947, and died in Albany on13 July 1985. He is buried in Allambie Cemetery, Albany.
