DRESS: EVENING, FULL LENGTH GREY NYLON

1953
Overview

From donor: 'Worn at Coronation Ball 1953 at the Hurlingham Club Coronation Ball held by Royal Empire Society (Commonwealth) and Victoria League for Commonwealth Friendship, London and Western Australia. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and H.R.H. Duke of Edinburgh present. Ball was held on Tuesday, 7 July 1953.' Dress is full length grey heavy quality open nylon. Bodice has straps at shoulders, diamond shaped insert centre front and ruched side and back panels. Skirt is flared and gathered to base of bodice ruching at hip level. Upper bodice has light grey net around upper edge and over shoulders - this seems like an addition of a later date as it is very roughly done, and may have been added to disguise other alterations where the bodice has been let-out. Zipper at left side. Note: 29/4/1999 - not nylon, probably synthetic (acetate). Netting is sheer (open weave). See also: shoes, photo P99.41, programme, invitation, etc.
