Overview

Front: Peggy Henwood and family at Crawley Beach. Mrs Doggett paddling in the water and holding her dress. Mrs E.W. Doggett and the children sit in a rowing boat on the beach. Mr Doggett stands on the other side of the boat. Fishing nets hang from lines in the background. Picket fences and trees are shown in the background.
Quote from letter: 'I'm enclosing a photo taken at Crawley, 1922, which was a very popular picnic beach. We used to walk from Smyth Road along Aberdare Road (then a sand track) then through the bush to Perth-Fremantle Road and through a farm where the university is now.
Fishermens' nets were hung to dry all along the beach. I remember the flies were very bad, mainly because of the horses tethered to the many trees that were there. A lot of people used to go to Crawley by horse and buggy and these were allowed to be tethered along the beach. In latter years the horses had to be tied in the bush on the other side of the tram lines, which ran from the city to Nedlands.
In the enclosed photo are: standing - my grandparents, Mr and Mrs C.R. Doggett, who built one of the first houses in Hopetoun Terrace, Shenton Park (both now deceased), my aunt, Mrs E.W. Doggett; and the children are Doxie Doggett, Rob Henwood and Peggy Henwood. My aunt still lives at 45 Hopetown Terrace. I might add that as children, we used to walk through the bush from our home in Smyth Road to Rosalie School.'
