RUBY STAIN GLASS, MINI-JUG, FLEET WEEK SOUVENIR, 1908
c. 1908A pressed glass pitcher shaped mini-jug with a pronounced flared spout and finely tapered waist, the upper part is ruby-stain glass etched to clear with a clear glass handle. The jug has a decorative patterned clear glass base known as "Button Arches".
This type of etched to clear ruby-stain glass was popular souvenir ware in the USA from 1890 - 1920s. The clear glass was coated with a chemical salt solution containing copper sulphide and baked in a kiln, turning the coating bright ruby red. The stain is then had etched to create a personalised memento of and occasion or event.
