PHOTOGRAPH: THE OVAL, SUBIACO

c. 1905
Subcollections
Overview

The image shows the Oval, looking towards the grandstand, with several players in action on the field. A fence runs around the playing area. There is a grandstand and scoreboard behind the fence. Houses can be seen in the background. The Oval was first called Mueller Reserve after a famous colonial botanist. In 1905, the area now occupied by Subiaco Oval was cleared of undergrowth to give it more the appearance of a park and in the following year a portion was fenced. Further improvements were made in 1909 when a 'spacious' grandstand was erected and an inner fence built around the playing area. Turnstiles were installed at Subiaco Oval in 1911. The print is taken from original 'Greetings from Subiaco' postcard.
